Surviving Through Crafts
♫ Monday, December 15th, 2008Crafts have more than likely been around as long as humans. Without crafts, how would man (or woman) have carved their first knife? Or spoon? In the beginning crafts had to be a form of survival. People needed to find ways to capture food, whether it was fish in the water or wild animals. And, of course, at some point someone must have decided how to use animal skins to make clothing and what to use to put them together.
We may think of crafts in the primitive days as a form of survival, but what about in the present? What do crafts mean today? People no longer think of crafts in survival terms. Instead, children see them as a fun project, teens see them as something that mothers or grandmothers enjoy, and men see them as one big mess in the room. However, to me, crafts are much more. They are not just for gift-giving,nor just a way to pass time. They are mind-stimulators, therapeutic ideas, and creative thoughts put into a physical form. When a person completes a craft project, self-esteem and confidence are built through appreciation.
